Tip of the Day – 6/24/09

You can rid a tank of cyanobacteria by increasing water flow, reducing nutrients, siphoning it out, using various additives or chemicals, and even turning the lights off for a few days. While most treatments are band-aids, reducing your nutrients is key to long term removal of the cyano.

When planning a new tank build, take everything into consideration. Plan meticulously so you don’t waste time and money fixing mistakes. Starting a new tank can be fun, but not if you make too many mistakes. Plan a parts list, make a template of the tank, and keep your budget in mind.

Coral banded shrimp can be neat looking invertebrates, but they are dangerous to other shrimp and even small fish. Please keep this in mind when considering to purchase a coral banded shrimp. They can wreak havoc on your smaller livestock.

Tip of the Day – 6/20/09

Calibrate your probes regularly. A pH probe for example can easily become uncalibrated and give false readings on your pH monitor or controller. Probes that are out of calibration can cause parameters to easily get out of the acceptable range.

Tip of the Day – 6/19/09

Always clean your hands before putting them into your aquarium. There is no telling what chemicals you may have picked up throughout the day and you certainly don’t want to introduce them into your aquarium. Simply running tap water over your hands and forearms will go a long way.

Purchasing a clam can be exciting, but pay close attention to the individual you select. Make sure it reacts well to light and shadows (should close up rapidly when you place your hand directly above it) and is parasite free.
