Clean the intake and impeller on all of your aquarium pump and powerheads regularly. Debris caught up on the intake can drastically reduce the amount of flow the pump can produce. Additionally, gunk can build up on the impeller and cause it to become unbalanced or even clogged, which might result in the breaking or bending of the impeller shaft.
