Tip of the Day – 8/25/09

When fragging hard corals, try to cut the branches lower on the parent colony. This will preserve the look of the parent coral and prevent lower branches from becoming overgrown and possibly bleaching.

Peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wundermanni) Eat Aiptasia

Peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wundermanni) are great little shrimp to have in a saltwater aquarium. They feed on Aiptasia anemones, and when those are gone they eat leftover food and detritus. Tip of the Day – 8/24/09

If you have problems with Aiptasia, consider buying peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) to take care of those annoying pest anemones. The shrimp will roam you aquarium and eat the anemones until they are all gone.

Tip of the Day – 8/23/09

When moving an aquarium, it is wise to use some sort of additive that will decrease the amount of ammonia and nitrite in your aquarium. When the sand is disturbed, it releases a lot of built up nutrients back into the water, which will decay into ammonia. This will devastate the already stressed out livestock.

Tip of the Day – 8/22/09

The best way to view your clams is from the top down. This is due to the orientation of the zooxanthellae in the clam’s tissue. If you look at the clam from the side, it will look somewhat dull.
