We got an email today from TheReefTank.com informing us that the AquaNerd Blog has been selected to join their “Recommended Reading” list. Tip of the Day – 11/22/09

When handling metal halide bulbs, try not to touch the glass. The grease and oils on your hand can cause the bulb to crack when it is heating up. Instead, use a clean cloth to handle the bulb and try to grab it by the ends (connectors).

Rare Footage of Small Eyed Stingray

While diving for manta rays in Mozambique, biologist Andrea Marshall captures a small eyed stingray on video. These stingrays are extremely rare and can grow up to 2.5 meters (about 8 feet) across. The video below is thought to be the first footage of the small eyed stingray to ever be shown. Here is a [...]

Each metal halide bulb has a small vent on the inner portion of the bulb. When inserting a single ended or double ended bulb, make sure this vent is point upward to allow hot air to escape from the inner portions of the bulb.

Shark Conservation Act of 2009

Oceana North America is reporting that the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has passed the Shark Conservation Act of 2009 yesterday, putting an end (hopefully) to the terrible practice of shark finning. This act, introduced by Senator John Kerry (D-MA) in April, would require all sharks caught in United States waters to be [...]

Tip of the Day – 11/20/09

Freshwater dips can be quite harsh on saltwater aquarium livestock. I’m not suggesting to not use them, just rule out other parasite and disease removal and prevention before giving your saltwater livestock a freshwater dip.

Eshopps PSK-75H in Action

A while back I saw an Eshopps hang-on-tank protein skimmer at a local fish store and was pretty impressed with the build quality and how well the skimmer performed. Now, I’ve found a video of an Eshopps PSK-75H hang-on-tank skimmer in action. These skimmers have a mesh modded impeller, along with a bubble plate to [...]

Setting Up a Calcium Reactor

After receiving multiple requests from fellow hobbyists to walk them through setting up a calcium reactor, I’ve decided to make a step-by-step guide on setting one up for their reef aquarium. To start, you must determine the size reactor you will need. The average calcium reactor is rated for aquariums about 200-250 gallons and moderately [...]
