Tip of the Day – 12/22/09

Did you know that brittle stars are not true sea stars? Brittle stars are Ophiurids, and differ from regular sea stars in many ways. For example, brittle stars don’t have tube feet or an ambulacral groove (groove on bottom of sea star legs). Additionally, these stars’ legs are attached to the central disk differently than [...]

Tip of the Day – 12/21/09

Please don’t buy the blue Linckia stafish. They never do well in home aquariums, typically starving to death after a couple of months.

New Skimmers From Precision Marine

I got the opportunity to talk to the owner of Precision Marine this past weekend and he informed me of a new line of protein skimmers currently in development. The new lineup will be called the Professional Series, catering to both the larger tank and more high-end crowds. Though details are scarce at the moment [...]

JBJ LED Nano Seen in the Wild

I’ve had the distinct privilege of getting to play with the brand new JBJ LED Nano Cube aquarium this weekend, and I must say that I was quite impressed with the new lighting scheme. The aquarium is based on the standard 28-gallon JBJ Nano Cube, with the only real change being the lights. The hood [...]

Tip of the Day – 12/20/09

Chocolate chip starfish may seem cute and fun while at the pet store. But these star fish will eat virtually any soft coral present in your aquarium. Additionally, if there’s not enough food for them, they will slowly dissolve.

New Coralife Powerheads

I was recently contacted by a friend of mine who runs the saltwater department at City Pets, a high volume pet store in Houston, and he informed me of a new line of powerheads being released by Coralife. I was invited to come over and take a look at the pumps, get a feel for [...]

MARSH Membership Drive at T&T Fish and Reptile

I had another busy weekend of aquarium events. My local aquarium society, the Marine Aquarium and Reef Society of Houston (MARSHReef), held a membership drive at T&T Fish and Reptile during their annual Christmas sale. They had plenty of new livestock brought in specifically for this event and lots of raffle prizes. The owner of [...]

Tip of the Day – 12/19/09

Going to aquarium events can be an easy way to pick up cheap, or even free, aquarium equipment. Aquarium clubs often raffle off drygoods or livestock, and tickets are usually only a couple bucks. So, attend aquarium events and maybe you’ll get lucky.

Fixing That Loud Overflow Box

Have an external overflow box that is unbearably loud? Eshopps, the maker of aquarium equipment such as overflow boxes, protein skimmers, and other plastic goods, has released a video showing you how to quiet that noisy overflow. The trick is apparently simple. Just insert tubing into the overflow and make adjustments until the noise subsides.
