Close Call for Reef Nutrition, Fire Erupts Nearby

Reef Nutrition, the producers of various liquid and live foods for reef aquariums and fish, narrowly avoided a nasty little early morning fire the other day, according to a KTVU News Story. A nearby office on the first story of a two-story building was apparently set ablaze by an arsonist. Reef Nutrition is located in [...]

Lightning Maroon Clown For Sale on Blue Zoo

The Lightning Maroon Clownfish from Papua New Guinea, which we originally posted about in an Article yesterday, has officially gone on sale (and very quickly sold) on Blue Zoo Aquatics. This spectacular looking fish sold for a whopping $2500 (and 95 cents). Whoever scooped up this fish had better make sure he or she is [...]

Tip of the Day – 3/31/10

Performing a water change can cause your protein skimmer to “go crazy”. You scrape algae from the glass, stir up detritus, corals are sliming, and other things are occurring that cause the protein skimmer to skim very wet and perform erratically.

Ocean and Beach Wall Murals

I came across an interesting website today that had several ocean and beach related wall murals. Most of the ocean-based murals at Total Wallcovering are geared toward beaches, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a huge mural of a tropical island plastered on my wall. Pictured above is an actual mural offered on their site…and there’s [...]

These clowns are very rare and very unique, and according to Reef Builders, will become available to the public through Blue [...]

Tip of the Day – 3/30/10

When attempting to drill a tank, make sure the particular pane of glass you are putting the hole in is not tempered. Manufacturers drill holes in the bottom of aquariums and then temper them. If you drill into a tempered pane, it will shatter.

From Hobbyists to Businessmen…a Change in Our Hobby

I have noticed a growing trend in the saltwater aquarium hobby over the last few years, and especially in the last few months. There is an increasing number of hobbyists turned aquarium businessmen. They get into this hobby much like any other person, as a new pastime for them to try their hand at. They [...]

Using Protein Skimmers as Problem Indicators

Aquarium keepers can usually spot a problem in their aquarium just by taking a quick look. The tank looks a little cloudy, a particular fish is swimming in an unusual manner, or coral polyps are retracted. But sometimes these things don’t get noticed or they don’t exist. Without typical visual cues, how does one know [...]

Picture of the Week – 3/29 – 4/4

Pictured is a neat littlel Favites colony. This colony is an aqua blue color with a neon green ring around each mouth.

Tip of the Day – 3/29/10

When building or designing your aquarium, keep in mind that your tank will weigh a ton…literally. Make sure that the foundation below the tank can support all that weight. Aquariums on a second story or in a house with a crawl space below the floor make for quite a challenge. To combat potential issues, it [...]
