Tip of the Day – 3/3/10

Want to make your aquarium green? Try solar tubes. They are tubes that use sunlight to light up your aquarium. The initial costs might be expensive, but you don’t have to pay to light your aquarium…which is a big plus.

I think the solartube idea is awesome, but I think that it will take complete vigilance to prevent the biggest algae blooms ever. Sunlight has such a high PAR value, that you could only get away with a small amount of full sun per day. The rest of the time it would need to be considerably dimmed. Also, for the cost that some spend on high output MH and even high end fluorescent lights, a few solar tubes could be a huge savings. Especially when you factor in the continuing costs of bulbs which can be an extra few hundred dollars per year.
