Fish with Hands Face Extinction

Here’s an interesting story from Treehugger.com about “Handfish”. Apparently, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization in Australia (CSIRO) recently discovered 9 new species of “handfish”. This new discovery brings the total count of “handfish” to 14 known species. But this may very quickly change, as all 9 of the newly discovered species are also [...]

Tip of the Day – 5/26/10

Crushed Coral substrate is a terrible choice of sand for your aquarium. And by “Crushed Coral”, I’m referring to the very large grain substrate that is sold by that name. It has a much lower surface area when compared to finer grain sand and it trap detritus, as well as grow all sorts of nasty [...]

Wavemakers making you dizzy? Just try randomizing the flow. You don’t have to have a back-and-forth wave to “mimic” nature. Just have a lot of flow and let it bounce off aquarium walls, collide with flow from other pumps, or even make a gyre aquarium.

Live Video from BP Oil Spill

Want up to the second updates on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill? The video above is actually a live feed, sent to us via remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that is currently monitoring the oil leak at the BP oil rig. The original feed is available through the British Petroleum website, along with several updates [...]

I’m sure by now everybody has heard something about the oil spill, but we thought we would express our opinion on the situation. First off, the reason [...]

Tip of the Day – 5/24/10

Want to move coral frags around in your aquarium with ease? Mount them to a thin, short acrylic rod and drill numerous holes in your live rock. This way, you can reposition corals with ease. No more messing with coral epoxy or toppling over rocks.

Picture of the Week – 5/24 – 5/30

Here is a pretty neat shot of a Cownose Stingray hovering over a Zebra Shark in the South Pacific exhibit at Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas.

Tip of the Day – 5/23/10

Do the suction cups on your powerheads keep giving up, causing your pump to wall off the aquarium wall and blow sand all over the place? You can replace the suction cups with magnets, or buy pumps with magnet mounts already in use.

Tip of the Day – 5/22/10

Want to make your acrylic aquarium or sump look professional? Try routing the corners of the tank to round them off. You can also use black acrylic for baffles, add probe holders, flame polish the edges, or use a eurobrace to prevent bowing.

Tunze Nanostream 6015

Tunze is targeting the nano aquarium audience again with the release of their new Tunze Nanostream 6015. This new pump will apparently be the same size of the other Nanostream pumps (6025, 6045, 6055), but it will only put out 1800lph/475gph. This will provide sufficient flow for smaller aquariums without blowing sand and corals all [...]
