Misconceptions About “Designer Fish”
I came across a great thread on ReefCentral about Designer Fish, and as I read I noticed quite a number of misconceptions regarding certain fish, specifically the Picasso and Snowflake clownfish. Several people who participated in the discussion had the idea that these clownfish were genetically altered or designed to look the way they do [...]

One tissue recession starts on a coral, it can be quite difficult to stop it. Fragging off the dead tissue can help, but you might have to frag off healthy tissue so that you have a healthy frag as insurance in case the entire colony dies.

Carbon can be your best friend. If you have any water parameter issues, livestock die off, or simply want to make your water clearer, add carbon to your filtration system. Carbon can be used in a filter bag or in a media reactor.
PETA Not Too Happy About Aquarium at Ballpark
It should come as no surprise that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is not too happy with the Florida Marlins, who are planning on incorporating two large saltwater aquariums into the backstop at their new ballpark. Their argument is that the livestock in the tank would be subjected to several stressful factors, [...]

Shrimp and other crustaceans will randomly molt in your aquarium. They inflate their bodies with excess water to crack their exoskeleton, then slowly wriggle out of their old “skin”. This leftover shell will not be eaten by the cleanup crew. There’s little nutritional value to the discarded exoskeleton and it takes a long time to [...]
Returning Livestock to the Oceans
Sometimes a fish outgrows an aquarium. Occasionally our livestock becomes too difficult to care for. When this occurs, and it will, you shouldn’t return the fish to the ocean. No matter how easy it would be, returning a fish to the ocean is a very bad thing. Non-native species can negatively impact a local ecosystem [...]

Auto top-offs can be an aquarium keepers best friend or worst nightmare. During normal operation, the top-off will automatically fill the sump with a fresh supply of reverse osmosis water. They can even be used to add kalkwasser to the tank. But the top-off can also fail in the on position, causing the tank to [...]
Fish Fossils
I think I may have found another hobby to pursue…and that’s fossil collecting. Being the typical nerdy guy, I like anything related to science. And after perusing the net for fossils to purchase (very bored at home), I realized just how much I wanted to combine my favorite hobby, aquariums, with another very interesting topic, [...]

Don’t use a flash when taking pictures of your aquarium. The flash will drowned out the true colors of your tank and will make the picture unattractive. Additionally, the sudden burst of bright light might frighten fish and other livestock into hiding, making future pictures a lot more difficult.
Stunning Anemone Shrimp Video via Coral Morphologic
Coral Morphologic keeps rolling out the gems. This time, the video is of the sun anemone shrimp (Periclimenes rathbunae). This species is the least common of the three Florida anemone shrimp, and unlike the other two species, P. rathbunae doesn’t performing any cleaning activity on fish. Instead, this shrimp will live exclusively on its anemone [...]
