Tip of the Day – 10/28/2012

By: Brandon Klaus

While most hobbyists would suggest performing a lights out treatment to combat various types of problems, mainly a cyanobacteria outbreak, this type of treatment might actually cause more harm than good. While most fish and corals will be fine for a few days without light, the aquarium’s pH might bottom out and the original reason for the treatment might not get fixed. Not to mention, a lights out period is only treating the symptom and not the cause, so when you kick the lights back on, the issue might come right back.
