Minimum Size to be Considered a Mother Colony?
I was perusing the gorgeous frags for sale on the ReefCentral Propagated Corals & Tank Raised Livestock Selling Forum out of boredom and I noticed one striking fact…many people are referring to some of their tiny, frag-sized corals as mother colonies. This discovery brought to mind the question, “At what size does a coral become [...]
ORA Blue Cespitularia
Here’s yet another new ORA release…a Blue Cespitularia. These corals are amazingly beautiful, with a sparkling blue body and polyps with an touch of orange. Additionally, these corals adapts to a variety of lighting conditions, but have the most intense coloration under lower light levels. This, along with the fact that these corals are aquacultured [...]
Picture of the Week – 5/10 – 5/16
This week’s Picture of the Week is a tad blurry, but it’s of one of my favorite corals…the Superman Montipora. This coral sports a blue base and bright red polyps. It grows by encrusting onto the rockwork, as opposed to plating outward like other Montis.
ORA Red Goniopora
ORA announced that it will be releasing a new coral to their lineup. The coral is the highly sought after red Goniopora LPS coral. Goniopora, aka Flower Pot corals, and their close relatives Alveopora, have been notoriously difficult to keep alive in captivity. Their special diet and environmental requirements have lead to many frustrations among [...]
Picture of the Week – 5/3 – 5/9
Pictured is a stunning blue Acropora coral glowing under natural sunlight. This picture doesn’t do much justice, but the blue on this coral stands out more than just about any other blue Acro I have ever seen.
MARSH Frag Swap Picnic
Here’s an update from the MARSH Frag Swap and Picnic that happened over the weekend. About 140 people registered for the event, with a much smaller number actually attending. Despite this, there were a lot of good looking frags and tons of used equipment. The weather was perfect and the food was great. Below is [...]
Busy Weekend for the AquaNerd
Wow, I’ve had such a busy weekend. I ordered a bunch of stuff from Premium Aquatics last week and they finally arrived on Friday. So, I cracked those boxes open and assembled my new Sunlight Supply Sunblaze 48 T5HO light fixture. This is the light that will go over the Frag Tank I’m currently in [...]
Picture of the Week – 4/26 – 5/2
Pictured is a very colorful Pink Birdsnest Seriatopora coral. These small polyped hard corals are very similar to Acroporids, but differ in the way they grow and encrust onto rockwork.
Stores Using Artificial Corals, Invertebrates for Decor
I was out and about with the wife today and we came across several stores selling, what appeared to be, dead corals and invertebrates. Dead coral skeletons, starfish, snails, and giant clams are very popular decor items and can be found in a lot of different stores across the world. I saw the skeletons and [...]
Progress on the Frag Tank
I made a little more progress on the frag tank. I have put some sand in it (I know frag tanks don’t typically have sand), have filled it about halfway with water, and I assembled one of the frag racks. The frag rack came out as good as could be expected. I used black eggcrate [...]
