Tip of the Day – 3/9/10

Want to add flow to your tank but not another power hungry powerhead or pump? Try using a penductor/eductor on the end of your return line. These devices drastically increase the amount of water coming from your return pump but don’t use even a watt of energy.

If you see an Aiptasia anemone in your tank, it would be wise to kill/remove it as quickly as possible. These anemones can spread very quickly, taking over your entire aquarium in no time.

Fish food is a vital part of livestock husbandry. It’s a good idea to feed your fish things they will likely encounter in the wild, such as small fish, mysis shrimp, copepods, and other items. It is not idea to feed large predators live fish like goldfish.

Tours at large public aquariums can be very beneficial to the advanced and beginner hobbyist. The tour can give the hobbyist helpful insight as to how things are done on a larger scale and you can chat with marine biologists and other scientists.

Tanks with damaged sections of silicone need to be completely taken down and re-siliconed. This advice especially holds true for older tanks, or aquariums that have been moved a lot. You can pick up aquarium-grade silicone at your local hardware store or find a company to do it for you.

Mangroves make for great natural aquarium filters, but oftentimes aquarists plant them incorrectly in the sandbed. The roots are where the nutrients are taken up and they need to be in the water column as opposed to buried in the sand. Float the mangroves and let the roots grow to the bottom.

Want to make your aquarium green? Try solar tubes. They are tubes that use sunlight to light up your aquarium. The initial costs might be expensive, but you don’t have to pay to light your aquarium…which is a big plus.

Be mindful of where you leave your fragging tools. If you leave them in your canopy or accidentally drop them in the water they will rust, regardless of what they are made of.

Tip of the Day – 2/28/10

Jellyfish do not make good aquarium pets. They require a unique aquarium that prevents them from running into the glass and most do not live long in captivity. Some, like the upside-down jellyfish, require intense lighting as they rely on photosynthesis for nutrition.
