Corals and Clams in Up Close Video
Corals and reef invertebrates are so extremely intricate and beautiful that sometimes the best way to view them is in extreme closeup. The swaying of individual polyps and the details of an animal’s tissue brings a whole new perspective to the aquarium hobby, one that many unfortunately go their entire lives without experiencing. And seeing [...]
Tridacna derasa Clam Moving Its Foot
Here’s a video of one of our ORA Tridacna derasa clams moving its food in order to reposition itself in the sand. This behavior is very common for juvenile clams, and one I’ve seen countless times at fish stores and in my personal aquariums. However, this is the first time there has been a camera [...]
Picture of the Week – 3/28 – 4/3
Pictured in this week’s AquaNerd POTW is a gorgeous Tridacna derasa clam. The T. derasa clam is the second largest of the giant clam species, reaching up to two feet long. This species has a very narrow byssal opening unlike T. maxima and T. crocea clams which are far more abundant in the aquarium trade. [...]
IPF Explains Why Aquarium Clams Die
I had the distinct privilege of hearing Gerald Heslinga of Indo-Pacific Sea Farms discuss Tridacna clam aquaculture while at NextWave. Tridacnids are of particular interest to me, as I find them to be both gorgeous and individually unique, not to mention I’ve owned and gawked at a countless number of them throughout the years, so [...]
Giant Clam Farms on Video
I stumbled across this interesting video over on the Reef2Reef Forums the other day. It’s an older video, though recently uploaded, that shows how Tridacnid clams are farmed. This Palau facility uses the nearby ocean as a major area for growing the broodstock clams, with the land-based portion reserved for breeding, juvenile grow out, and [...]
Picture of the Week – 4/5 – 4/11
This week’s AquaNerd Picture of the Week is of a very unique Tridacna derasa clam from the Waikiki Aquarium. What makes this clam so unique is that is has an uncommon coloration and is lacking the typical blue rim along the mantle that T. derasa’s usually have.
Hawaii – Waikiki Aquarium and Maui Ocean Center
In June of 2007 I had the privilege of going to Hawaii for my honeymoon. Our primary destination was Maui, but we got to spend a day in Oahu. While in Hawaii, my understanding new wife let us go to see two public aquariums: the Maui Ocean Center and the world renown Waikiki Aquarium. The [...]
