Picture of the Week – 7/12 – 7/18
Pictured above is a light blue-green Acropora loisettae growing among other SPS corals. This particular Acro will grow long, thing branches. This mini-colony started out as a 1/2″ frag, that quickly encrusted onto the surrounding rocks and eventually grew more branches. Most Acro corals do very well under T5HO lighting, and even thrive long-term. Metal [...]
Minimum Size to be Considered a Mother Colony?
I was perusing the gorgeous frags for sale on the ReefCentral Propagated Corals & Tank Raised Livestock Selling Forum out of boredom and I noticed one striking fact…many people are referring to some of their tiny, frag-sized corals as mother colonies. This discovery brought to mind the question, “At what size does a coral become [...]
Picture of the Week – 6/28 – 7/4
Pictured this week is an Acropora sarmentosa, purchased from T&T Fish and Reptile. More mature colonies can develop into a plating structure. This colony is still young, but you can begin to see some of this plating as branches fuse together in some spots.
Feeding the Infamous DSPS Tank from Thailand
By now everyone has seen the amazing 1000-gallon DSPS tank from Thailand. Pictures and videos of this stunning aquarium have been plastered all over ReefCentral and other places on the web, so most people know what we’re talking about. But in case you aren’t following the tank’s progress as closely as we are, here’s a [...]
Picture of the Week – 5/10 – 5/16
This week’s Picture of the Week is a tad blurry, but it’s of one of my favorite corals…the Superman Montipora. This coral sports a blue base and bright red polyps. It grows by encrusting onto the rockwork, as opposed to plating outward like other Montis.
Picture of the Week – 5/3 – 5/9
Pictured is a stunning blue Acropora coral glowing under natural sunlight. This picture doesn’t do much justice, but the blue on this coral stands out more than just about any other blue Acro I have ever seen.
MARSH Frag Swap Picnic
Here’s an update from the MARSH Frag Swap and Picnic that happened over the weekend. About 140 people registered for the event, with a much smaller number actually attending. Despite this, there were a lot of good looking frags and tons of used equipment. The weather was perfect and the food was great. Below is [...]
Picture of the Week – 4/26 – 5/2
Pictured is a very colorful Pink Birdsnest Seriatopora coral. These small polyped hard corals are very similar to Acroporids, but differ in the way they grow and encrust onto rockwork.
Picture of the Week – 3/22 – 3/28
Pictured is a stunning Tyree Limited Edition Purple Monster. This particular specimen was housed in a ZEOvit filtered aquarium, so it’s color seems more pastel and lighter than most other Purple Monster Acropora corals.
Demise of Coral Blamed on Internet
According to a recent AP story on Yahoo!, the internet is being declared as one of the largest threats to rare wildlife, including corals. The article focused mainly on newts, tigers, and ivory, but it did touch on the coral trade to some extent. The corals threatened were described as red and pink corals, which [...]
